Så er Apples Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard snart ude og så skal der holdes install party! Just a man and his machine hehe
Og den koster kun kr. 226,- i Apple Store hvis man har 10.5 Leopard. Sådan!

Der skal nok være nogen der mener at det er horribelt at man skal betale for en “service pack”. Nu er sagen dén, at Snow Leopard er meget mere end en “service pack”. Det ikke er en fix af et ødelagt operativsystem, fordi Leopard altid har været et sublimt OS og aldrig givet mig problemer. Af fede nye features kommer ny Quicktime, ny-gammel Finder, ny iChat, forbedring af UI og Exposé og ikke mindst Exchange-understøttelse. Men det bedste er optimeringen af fundamentet, hvilket giver et hurtigere og lettere OS. Dét glæder jeg mig til.

Apple har helt klart det lange ben foran med deres stabile release cycle. Ca. et år for hver minor udgivelse. Det giver en gennemsigtbarhed og forudsigelighed som gør, tror jeg, at mange ikke føler sig taget i røven. Man kan jo altid springe en udgivelse over og hoppe på den næste. Der er ingen synkende skude. Ingen bliver efterladt på åbent hav. På fredag søsættes endnu en galleon i IT-verdenens svar på den spanske Armada.

Update Fredag d. 4 September: Nu har jeg endelig fået et eksemplar mellem fingrene. Forhåbentlig er der tid i aften til at installere det. Ars Technica har også publiseret deres dybdegående review. Altid spændende læsning:

Snow Leopard is a unique and beautiful release, unlike any that have come before it in both scope and intention. At some point, Mac OS X will surely need to get back on the bullet-point-features bandwagon. But for now, I’m content with Snow Leopard. It’s the Mac OS X I know and love, but with more of the things that make it weak and strange engineered away.

iMac off to service

My iMac began having problems after upgrading to OS X Leopard 10.5.2 + Graphical Updates.
See Black horizontal lines in Safari windows for details on the problem. My alias is Munkejens.

So I sent it off to service today. Now it’s Apple’s problem. So be careful installing those updates on your iMac.
What a shame. And I’m off to Easter vacation with my cousin and some very good friends – taking photos of the scenery, the animals and of course of us being drunk. These photos will have to wait for a month before I can edit them.

Harddisk smadret

Earlier this week, my PowerBook choked while I sat down to do my usual news- and email-check.
The harddrive started to make some serious bad noises; noises that makes your stomach hurt when you know the outcome might be complete dataloss.
Yesterday I brought it to a nearby Apple store for reparation. The error description read “harddisk smadret” (harddrive smashed). Nothing less. Thank god for my iPod – had it not been set to syncronize with iTunes, Calendar and Addressbook, I would have suffered quite a big dataloss.
Important documents and emails were for the most part stored online or on my USB-harddrive.

The worst part by far, is the loss of my photos. I believe I have lost approximately 5500 pictures and a bunch of videos. I haven’t backed up my photo-library since last year (stupid, yeah I know). Some photos are saved on my gallery, but many moments of my life are now undocumented and lots of cool shots are gone. Kind of saddening to think of all that lost work and memories.

The good part is that I will get a new harddrive with 120 Gb storage. Twice the size of the old one. Not sure if I’ll ever need it, but it will increase the value and lifespan of the PowerBook.
Hopefully it will return before the end of the month. Lots of new music needs to be added to my iPod, you know.

New weblog and homepage

Hi again all.

The emperor has returned in new clothes: I have installed a new weblog powered by WordPress. I decided to change from BBlog, not because BBlog was bad in any way but because I wanted a consistent look when publishing articles (now called Pages) and when writing blogs. I accidentally stumpled upon WordPress and thought it look quite good. So after some testing of WordPress, I decided to make the change. Here’s the result. Not spectacular, but very efficient.
