apple, computing, macosx, snowleopard
Så er Apples Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard snart ude og så skal der holdes install party! Just a man and his machine hehe
Creating an operating system is as much a social exercise as a technological one. Creating a platform, even more so. All of Snow Leopard’s considerable technical achievements are not just designed to benefit users; they’re also intended to goad, persuade, and otherwise herd developers in the direction that Apple feels will be most beneficial for the future of the platform. [...]
I imagine all the teams at Apple that worked on Snow Leopard absolutely reveled in the opportunity to polish their particular subsystems without being burdened by supporting the marketing-driven feature-of-the-month. In any long-lived software product, there needs to be this kind of release valve every few years, lest the entire code base go off into the weeds. [...]
Should you buy Mac OS X Snow Leopard? If you’re already running Leopard, then the answer is a resounding “yes.” If you’re still running Tiger, well, then it’s probably time for a new Mac anyway. When you buy one, it’ll come with Snow Leopard. [...]
Snow Leopard is a unique and beautiful release, unlike any that have come before it in both scope and intention. At some point, Mac OS X will surely need to get back on the bullet-point-features bandwagon. But for now, I’m content with Snow Leopard. It’s the Mac OS X I know and love, but with more of the things that make it weak and strange engineered away.

My iMac began having problems after upgrading to OS X Leopard 10.5.2 + Graphical Updates.
See Black horizontal lines in Safari windows for details on the problem. My alias is Munkejens.
So I sent it off to service today. Now it’s Apple’s problem. So be careful installing those updates on your iMac.
What a shame. And I’m off to Easter vacation with my cousin and some very good friends – taking photos of the scenery, the animals and of course of us being drunk. These photos will have to wait for a month before I can edit them.
By the way, happy Easter.

Earlier this week, my PowerBook choked while I sat down to do my usual news- and email-check.
The harddrive started to make some serious bad noises; noises that makes your stomach hurt when you know the outcome might be complete dataloss.
Yesterday I brought it to a nearby Apple store for reparation. The error description read “harddisk smadret” (harddrive smashed). Nothing less. Thank god for my iPod – had it not been set to syncronize with iTunes, Calendar and Addressbook, I would have suffered quite a big dataloss.
Important documents and emails were for the most part stored online or on my USB-harddrive.
The worst part by far, is the loss of my photos. I believe I have lost approximately 5500 pictures and a bunch of videos. I haven’t backed up my photo-library since last year (stupid, yeah I know). Some photos are saved on my gallery, but many moments of my life are now undocumented and lots of cool shots are gone. Kind of saddening to think of all that lost work and memories.
The good part is that I will get a new harddrive with 120 Gb storage. Twice the size of the old one. Not sure if I’ll ever need it, but it increases the values and lifespan of the PowerBook.
Hopefully it will return before the end of the month. Lots of new music needs to be added to my iPod, you know.

Here’s a tip. It might be old news to some but I still find it funny.
Try searching Google for the word “failure” and hit the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button (first searchhit).
Now, that is truly magnificent.

This article tells the story of a stupid company: Surftown smider blogger ud efter digg-effekt.
A blogger has been kicked out of his hostingservice, Surftown, after one post on his blog was quoted on digg.com and resulted in excessive traffic on their network. Explanation: not excessive traffic but inefficient code and therefore using too many ressources.
While I can understand that a hostingservice has limited ressources and probably couldn’t support the traffic if all sites on their network was access at the same time without it being noticed by their customers.
But kicking one out with a month notice and without any form of agreement is stupid.
The increase in traffic was only temporary until the digg-effect would wear off.
I guess Surftown prefer no customer uses their network and giving them least amount of traffic and maintenance.
I lost a lot of respect for Surftown and can no longer recommend them to anybody.
Thank god I’m hosting this myself.

Phew! I must say the new 13.3″ MacBook is pretty nice.
Have a closer look at the black version on AppleInsider.
Makes me almost wish my beloved and trusty “old” 12″ PowerBook was due to be replaced…. almost.

Since I got hired by Software Innovation A/S a year ago, I had to change developing in my preferable IDE (at that time Eclipse) to Visual Studio 2003. While VS2003 is not bad, I hope that most .NET developers lives in a happy ignorance not knowing what they are missing.
A good post on IDE’s by Joerg Plewe explains this a bit further:
NetBeans, Eclipse, IDEA … pah! VS2003!

I’d like my girlfriend to knit one of these: Linux scarf. She says it might be too difficult, so I guess I just gotta insist more. Then again, it might not be finished before the winter is over.
A cool scarf anyhow.

Hi again all.
The emperor has returned in new clothes: I have installed a new weblog powered by WordPress. I decided to change from BBlog, not because BBlog was bad in any way but because I wanted a consistent look when publishing articles (now called Pages) and when writing blogs. I accidentally stumpled upon WordPress and thought it look quite good. So after some testing of WordPress, I decided to make the change. Here’s the result. Not spectacular, but very efficient.
